This book is an interesting regional study containing a collection of data from the 19th century to the recent times presenting the diversity of cyanobacteria inhabiting the waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk (Baltic Sea) and adjacent reservoirs, such as the Vistula Lagoon and the Szczecin Lagoon. It is worth emphasizing that the authors also include species occuring in other parts of the Baltic Sea, recognized as potentially occuring in the flora of the Gulf of Gdańsk. They present the detailed information on the adopted new taxonomic system of cyanobateria developed by Strunecký et al. in 2023.
This elaboration will serve not only as an academic handbook, but also for cyanobacteria researchers and workers monitoring the conditio of marine and fresh waters. The handbook is significant of both scientific and documentary values, as it contains an exceptionally rich collection of drawing documentation for almost 200 taxa taken from original studies presented together with the first descriptions of species. It also contains many photographs (for 43 taxa) of Baltic specimens taken by the authors.
